Optimism

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I would like to think that I’m a pretty optimistic person.  I always think things will work out the way they should, whether that is the way I want them to or not may not happen, but I think whatever happens that is the way it is supposed to be.

Why am I like this?  I don’t know.  That’s a good question.  I’ve learned this way of thinking has led me to a pretty stress free life.  It doesn’t mean there isn’t stress, but when an outcome arises that I don’t like it helps me deal better with the situation.

In short, we all have a limited time on this earth and there isn’t a whole lot that happens we can control.  Worry about the things you can control and be proactive and understanding about those you can’t.  It has lead me to have an innate faith in the way things are and handle the good and the bad.

I don’t know…just a thought.

Long Island Douchebags

October 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This might be my favorite stereotype.  The blowout haircut, the fake tan, the small shirts, the popped collars, pink shirts….I could go on and on.  The eastern shoreboard is filled with these guys.  They spread like cockroaches scurrying in the light.

You can usually find them at a dance club, with at least seven other similarly dressed dbags.  They will be sipping on cocktails, doing shots, they might have their shirts off, and they will be dancing the night away to the house music.  While electronica annoys most people it attracts ecstasy freaks and douchebags.  If you are a female I would suggest staying out their way, especially if you are standing between them and a mirror.

Douchebags can be found in various tv shows and movies.  Most notably Growing Up Gotti.  It’s a shame when mobsters have kids like this, it destroys the tough guy image.

There is help though…visit getoffourisland.com to see what is being done to stop this nonsense.

Voter Fraud

October 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Every election cycle there are always claims of voter fraud/intimidation/etc.  One of the most important aspects I think government needs to provide is ensuring the integrity of our elections.  The quickest way for a democracy crumble is for people to lose faith that their votes are meaningless or don’t count.

So if you want to ensure a level playing field and help out a pretty brown girl enter this contest!

I’m going to enter, but only if I can win a date with this girl as well!

Hillbillies

October 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Since my last post in my stereotype profiles was on yuppies, I thought I would pull a 180 and go with Hillbillies today.

The hillbilly is a uniquely American stereotype that takes us back to a day of frontiersmen and self reliance.  I can greatly admire a culture that fully embrace their culture and way of living with little thought of the outside world.  They ask for nothing other than to live their lives they way they want to.  It almost sounds utopian.

The Hillbilly has been lamponed in numerous films and tv shows, yet who has met an actual hillbilly?

Well, apparently, they still exist.  I watched a documentary on Appalachia and some of their inhabitants about a year ago and I loved it.  If, like me, you are fascinated by how people chose to live their lives, especially when it is vastly different from yours I think you’ll enjoy it.  I would also recommend the History Channel’s special on Hillbillies.  You’ll have to put up with Billy Ray Cyrus, but he isn’t horribly distracting.

There are plenty of Pros and Cons to being a hillbilly and I guess if you don’t mind everyone thinking you are inbred and dumb and you like living in the woods then go for it!

Yuppies

October 28, 2008 · 1 Comment

I love yuppies.  I love stereotypes in general.  I probably love them so much because I am one…it’s sad, but true.

Hence why I like things like The Onion, Stuff White People Like, Dave Matthews Band and The Office.  It’s obvious I’m white and I have generic tastes.

There is good news though!  If I were to live in San Fran (and hopefully this will becoming to a city near you soon) I could find other narcisstic assholes like myself thanks to a webapp Gentrify!  Yay!

Rehab and Addiction

October 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

The picture to the left is of a rehab facility in Pakistan for heroin addicts.  I think it shows the lonely existence and personal hell most addicts live through every day.

I find it fascinating that people could put the consumption of a chemical over any other need they or their loved ones may have.  The fact parents could abandon their kids or people could steal from their parents is unfathomable to me.

Intervention on A&E is an amazing show.  To see how selfish addicts can become and the terror they cause their families is almost as amazing as the unwavering love and support their families show them in return.

Now, Dr. Drew is coming out with a new season of Celeb Rehab.  While it feels a little exploitative to me, if it can get these people help and on the road to recovery then it is probably the best thing that could happen.  As a celebrity it probably takes longer than anyone to hit rock bottom because there is always going to be someone that will be there to support you and your addiction allowing them to spiral further and further out of control.

One thing that does bother me is when people go to rehab to avoid real world problems they have created.  See here, here and here.

Presidential Charitable Giving

October 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I was reading an article today about how much each presidential ticket has given to charitable causes over the last couple of years.  Here are the numbers (I didn’t see any numbers for Palin):

Obama:  1.04%
Biden:    0.15%
McCain: 19.0%

I love this part the most: Beginning in 1991, McCain donated his Senate salary increase to charity as he voted against it and pledged to not accept it. This salary increase continues to be donated 16 years later.

Honestly, for men of such great wealth it is disappointing they don’t give more.  I believe we can achieve more through charitable contributions and volunteering then we ever can through government entitlement programs.  If you don’t believe me maybe you should watch this.  Even Mayor Nagin realizes individuals are the key to the rebuilding of his city.

I’ll leave you with this quote:

Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.” – St. Francis of Assisi

My Leader

October 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What can you say about John Stossel?  He’s a libertarian, he likes argyle and he has a mustache.  What more do you want?  Maybe if he was Czech he would be perfect.

If you haven’t read his book Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity, you should.  It’s a bible of common sense which most of America is missing.  Along with his work on 20/20 and the countless specials they have had, John has eloquently laid out an argument of what is wrong with America and what we can do to fix it.

I’m not here to preach about how right he is, I’ll let you figure that out for yourself.  Just remember if you don’t like John he probably doesn’t like you either.

Gangland

October 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I love the History Channel!  If I had to only one channel to chose…well to be honest it would sports related, but if I could pick two the History Channel would be #2!

Gangland might just be my favorite series of theirs.  Although, The Presidents mini-series was amazing too.  Gangland is great though.  1 hour about a different gang every week!  It’s fascinating!

While fast money and a celebrated lifestyle draw many in, what keeps them in?  You would think the fear of going to jail or getting killed would drive most away, but yet they stay.  Fascinating!  I wish I had an answer for it!

Check it out!
