In My Life

Do you feel any different?

January 21, 2009 · Leave a Comment

obama-jesusSo today is the first day of the rest of our lives…right?  Yesterday, history was made.  Obama swooped in and saved us all from certain doom.  Once again things will be OK.  Right?

I don’t know about you, but I feel exactly the same as I did yesterday.  Maybe a little less stressed, but that has less to do with Obama and the fact I got a lot accomplished yesterday.  Who knows though, maybe Obama eased my pain…

My point is, we should all curtail our expectations.  The supposed great thing about our country is no single man should be able to wield enough power to completely change the way our country operates (I believe the judicial and legislative branches might have some thoughts on their own about President Obama’s policies).  I feel the burden of expectations are mounting and I wonder if a rather untested politician has the wherewithal to live up to what is expected.  Americans are so disillusioned with the America President Bush created they expect President Obama to come in and make things right again.

My hope is he is smart enough to realize we can’t spend our way out of a recession.  Instead of creating jobs he should focus on helping industries create careers and helping Americans learn how to help themselves.  How can we expect or citizens to be smart about their debt if our own government isn’t?

I pray that President Obama is smart enough to make the right decisions without bankrupting our country and prolonging our current turmoil.  He should start by reading a recent WSJ Op-Ed about the Great Depression.  The following excerpt I hope the President takes to heart:

By 1939 Roosevelt’s own Treasury secretary, Henry Morgenthau, had realized that the New Deal economic policies had failed. “We have tried spending money,” Morgenthau wrote in his diary. “We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. . . . After eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. . . . And an enormous debt to boot!”

MLK 2008

mlk

Today we remember one of the greatest men of the 20th Century.  Martin Luther King Jr. exemplified the myriad of traits all leaders hope to exemplify.  While he was in the forefront of the civil rights movement he was never THE movement.

His hope that one day every American has the opportunity of success and failure irregardless the color of their skin has changed the face of this nation.  As a country we struggle every day with race, but as each year passes we move in the right direction.

Farewell Good Friend

January 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

ousadfanSo it ends….

Unfortunately, for the Sooners and for Big 12 fans, it didn’t end the way we wanted.  However, overall we didn’t fair so bad this bowl season.  Here are the conference bowl records:

Conference Schools Record Percentage
Pac-10 Ariz,Cal,Ore,OSU,USC 5-0 1.000
SEC Ala,Fla,Ga,Ky,LSU,Miss,SCar,Vandy 6-2 .750
Big East Cin,Pitt,Rut,UConn,USF,WV 4-2 .667
C-USA EC,Hou,Mem,Rice,SMiss,Tulsa 4-2 .667
MWC AF,BYU,CSU,TCU,Utah 3-2 .600
Big 12 KU,Mizzou,Neb,OU,OSU,Tex,TT 4-3 .571
Independents Navy,Notre Dame 1-1 .500
Sun Belt Fla. Atlantic,Troy 1-1 .500
ACC BC,Clem,FSU,GT,Mary,Miami, NC,NCS,VT,WF 4-6 .400
WAC BSU,FresSt,Haw,LaTech,Nev 1-4 .200
Big Ten Iowa,MichSt,Minn,NWestrn,OSU,PSU,Wis 1-6 .143
MAC BallSt,Buff,CMich,NIU,WMich 0-5 .000

At least we had a winning record, and at least we aren’t the ACC or Big 10.  It’s nice that the Big 12 has been represented rather generously in previous BCS Championship games, I just wish we would win more of them.  Most of this year I thought the Big 12 was the class of the nation while the SEC was number 2, however I might have to change my mind now.  I think the spread offenses taking over college football are being shown not to be highly effective against top notch defenses.

OU’s ultimate downfall was they couldn’t run the ball when they had to.  They couldn’t control the line of scrimmage.  Failing to score when you have first and goal and getting stopped twice at the 1 just won’t win you games.  The truly great teams can make plays when they matter even when the other team knows exactly what is coming.  Florida did that and OU didn’t.

Anyway, enough about the game.  I’m depressed that college football is over.  Even though my teams sucks, as an eternal optimist I look to next year to be better.  After all, it couldn’t get worse right?  So as spring begins and I try to find reasons to stay interested in baseball, I will mark my calendar for the college football to begin again.  I just wish I could get one last game in…….

Let the Fear Mongering begin!

January 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

obamaSo President Obama spoke at George Mason University (Go Patriots!) today predicting things will only get worse if the Government doesn’t pump 800 Billion into our economy.  To put in how much a billion is, go here.

While I don’t doubt that President Obama wants what is best for America, I feel this solution is very short-sited.  Much like the bailouts of the auto industry.  I feel it would be best if he would take heed to the problems facing Medicare and Social Security, which judging by this he recognizes.

I believe our government should be finding ways to help Americans help themselves.  We are a country of hard working and independent people.  Making future generations pay for mistakes now and in the past just perpetuates the problem.

If he really wants to help our country he should give Americans the opportunity to chose what they do with their money.  I firmly believe I’m a better advocate of where my money should be spent and how to best benefit me and my family over the government choosing for us.  We are all looking for opportunities to better our current situation and by putting more money back in each American’s pockets people will spend which will stimulate the economy, but they will save which will loosen the grip on the current credit crunch.

New Years Resolutions

January 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

new-yearWho doesn’t like lying?  And more importantly who doesn’t like lying to themselves?  That is exactly why each January millions of Americans make promises to themselves in hopes that this will be the year they will actually run that marathon, or lose that 50 lbs., or find true love.

As an eternal optimist I tend to make resolutions every day.  I usually bail on them by lunch, but hey I tried.  I’ve also turned over several new leaves, so that should say something about my willingness to change and my lack of motivation to follow through.  But who needs accountability anyway?  That’s for pussies.

So while most people might snicker when you tell them after 30 years you are finally going to quit smoking in 2009 or you are going to get into that size 2 dress after 10 years as a size 22, I say go for it.  If you aren’t going to dream big then why dream at all?  Besides maybe if you fail the government will bail you out…

fireworks

2008 is about to be over…so sad.  It was a great year, but I have hopes 2009 will be even better.

I hope my 2009 starts much like my 2008, a little hazy….

Happy New Year!

Cheers!

All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all…

Lately

“Lately”
By: David Gray

That the sky would lift
That I’d find my place
That I’d see your face in the door
And the sun would glint
On a time well spent
On a time that ain’t no more

Takes the broken hearts
In the vacant lots
To see the fruit that rots on the trees
Had to turn my head
Leave it all for dead
But it’s in my mind always

Honey lately I’ve been way down
Load on my mind
Honey lately I’ve been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I’m damned if I know
I seen that look in your eye
No one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye
Goodbye

Drag a salted kiss
From this cup of bliss
Watch a new lie twist on the breeze
You can paint it red
Or Leave it all for dead
But it’s in my head always

Honey lately I’ve been way down
Load on my mind
Honey lately I’ve been way down
Load on my mind

Someone tell me where did it go
Darling I’m damned if I know
I seen that look in your eye
No one ever gave it a chance
I could have said in advance
You saw it all at a glance
And goodbye

Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye

Now Honey lately
Yah Honey lately
Honey lately I’ve been way down
Yah Honey lately I’ve been way down
Yah Honey lately I’ve been way down
Honey lately I’ve been way down
Lately
Lately
Lately

The Blues

December 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

ledbellyThe WSJ had a great article today on the beginning of the blues.  Through the article they play to the fact that out of horrible times come some of the most beautiful things in our lives.  Especially creatively.

I love blues music personally.  I like the driving beat to it, the lamenting of hard luck, and passion with which it is played.  The amazing thing is out of it I think comes a lot of hope and optimism and a gratefulness for what one does have.

I think every great blues musician, while a masochist, can take the the most degradable circumstances and turn it into something beautiful that brings happiness to many.  Some might think misery loves company, but if you go to a blues performance misery will be the last thing you will find.

It’s a uniquely American form of music, that along with Jazz, has shaped our country as we know it today.  Every musician has been influenced at some level by a genre that has had the most humble of beginnings.  I think in that you find the American dream and the American spirit that makes our country so great.
